CINEMECCANICA was founded in May 1920. In the beginning products included motorcycle engines and cast pieces.
In 1924 the company dropped all other products and concentrated on theatre equipment.
In the '30s 35 mm lightweight cameras were developed, with magnesium body, for aerial cinematography.
In 1945 the export drive begun. The first foreign market to be developed was France.
In 1959 an agreement was signed between CMC and the Rank Organization by which Rank stopped making their range of Gaumont Kalee equipment and started installing CMC equipment in all their cinemas and marketing it in 33 countries(most-ly Commonwealth countries, but also some other, as Colombia, Finland, Norway). This agreement gave CMC a lot of visibility and put the Cinemeccanica name on the world map. Rank, having sold all their theatres other than in the UK, gave up on the CMC agency in 1984.
In 1961 The Victoria 8 projector was launched. This projector is still currently made and is widely considered the Rolls Royce of the projectors.
In 1962 marketing in the US was started with the Hornstein family in New York. In 1964 the US agency was tranferred to Xetron (then called Carbons, Inc.) until 1981.
In 1975 the Victoria 5 projector was developed as a system and marketed. This projector is today the most versatile and reliable projector, and the one with the widest installed base.
In 1985 the American subsidiary, Cinemeccanica U.S. Inc., was created, in Clearwater, Fla.
In 1992 we were the first to successfully develop, in close cooperation with Dolby Labs, basement readers: one for the digital SR*D sound format, and a new reverse scan analogue reader for the SVA sound format that dramatically improves the qual-ity of the reproduction of SVA tracks.
In 1995 the French subsidiary, Cinemeccanica France SA, was created in Paris.
