In 1970, Dolby Laboratories first demonstrated that its patented A-type noise reduction could lower the background hiss of optical soundtracks, making it possi-ble to record a wider frequency range. In those days, cinema loudspeakers had lim-ited and uneven frequency responses and Dolby went on to develop a practical speaker equalization system.
As Dolby demonstrated this new equipment to the film studio sound mixers, it became apparent that the film industry was looking for more than an improvement to mono optical sound. What was really needed was a new, but practical multi-chan-nel format to replace the costly magnetic formats that were already falling into dis-use. With this aim in mind, Dolby undertook further research and development and, in 1975, introduced Dolby Stereo, the first practical multi-channel optical sound-track.
Importantly, at all times during this development process, Dolby worked with both sides of the film industry, providing both the equipment and the support for the soundtrack mixing and supplying the processors for cinema playback. Dolby Stereo was accepted as a true evolution in film sound.
Those early days set the pattern that Dolby has followed ever since. Each improvement made to film sound - Dolby SR, Dolby Digital and now including Dolby Digital Surround EX - has been implemented in response to the industry's demands, by designing and manufacturing the necessary equipment, and always providing the hands-on assistance to make it happen.
When you select equipment manufactured by Dolby Laboratories for your cine-ma, you receive more than a reliable, high-performance processor. You also benefit from a unique support structure dedicated to "making films sound better"-and to helping you achieve sound in your cinema that will keep audiences coming back again and again.
Dolby CP650 Digital Cinema Processor
The CP650 is the latest step in the long evolution of Dolby cinema sound, an all-digital cinema processor for the playback of all Dolby soundtrack formats, combin-ing advanced signal-processing technology, highest-quality components, and sophisticated manufacturing processes to ensure the best sound and utmost relia-bility.
The CP650 is also the most cost-effective Dolby processor, because - if neces-sary - it can first be installed in an analogue form. Excellent reproduction of any analogue soundtrack is provided by a fully digital implementation of both Dolby A-type and Dolby SR decoding. Then, the unit can be easily upgraded to Dolby Digital and finally to Dolby Digital Surround EX.
Looking to the future, the ability to accept software upgrades will ensure the CP650's long-term viability. The unit also has a built-in Ethernet interface. External setup software is available, in several languages, which simplifies calibration, trou-bleshooting, downloading software upgrades and transferring settings via a per-sonal computer. Connection ports are conveniently located behind a front-panel access door. Finally, the CP650 features a built-in real-time analyzer and EQ AssistLLJ, system, which enables an exceptionally fast theatre equalization.
