Founded in Reykjavik in 1983, Marel has since risen to become one of the world's leading developers and manufacturers of high-technology processing equipment for the food industry. Today the Marel Group operates seven subsidiary companies in Europe and the US, while its network of agents and distributors covers some 27 countries on six continents.
In 1997 Marel acquired Carnitech A/S, one of the world's main suppliers of turnkey fish, shellfish and meat processing systems. Based in Stovring, Denmark, the company operates subsidiaries in Norway and the US (Seattle), and is one of the leading specialists in its field.
In May 2000, Marel also acquired a controlling interest French engineering company Arbor Technologies. Based near Lorient, Brittany, the company produces a range of processing equipment for the fish, meat and poultry industries, and the purchase represents the latest in a series of on-going efforts by Marel to strengthen its marketing position in Europe, an area in which the company has achieved encouraging results in recent years.
Although Marel production initially involved the design and manufacture of weighing and monitoring equipment, the company's portfolio now includes a complete range of super-fast scales, software, monitoring equipment, and intelligent portioning and grading modules and integrated systems suitable for use in all major sectors of the food industry.
From the outset, quality and reliability have played a major role in Marel operations. Formal recognition of this fact came in 1997, when Marel hf, the Group's parent company, became the first, and to date only company in its field to receive ISO 9001 certification from the International Standards Organization for quality in product development, sales, manufacturing, and after-sales services.
