Предметом деятельности и основными направлениями работ ИГиРГИ являются:
Анализ состояния сырьевой базы и оценка добывных возможностей нефтяной и газовой промышленности Российской Федерации;
Научное обоснование приоритетных направлений геологоразведочных работ и инвестиций на нефть и газ;
Количественная и геолого-экономическая оценка прогнозных ресурсов;
Мониторинг лицензирования нефтегазоносных объектов, конкурсов и аукционов на право пользования недрами;
Мониторинг разработки месторождений, эксплуатируемых на условиях СРП;
Экспертиза ТЭО и проектов разведки и разработки месторождений на условиях ДНС и СРП;
Анализ экономических и фискально-правовых условий проведения разведки и добычи нефти и газа в зарубежных странах;
Анализ деятельности иностранных компаний в области разведки и добычи нефти и газа;
Разработка системы мониторных моделей основных нефтегазоносных провинций Российской Федерации;
Научное и аналитическое сопровождение проектов глубокого бурения;
Создание интегрированных информационных систем с использованием технологий ГИС;
Ведение лицензированной образовательной и издательской картографической деятельности.

- Analysis of the situation with raw materials and evaluation of the extractive capacities of the Oil & Gas industry of Russian Federation
- Scientific justification for the priority directions for geological and explorations activities and investments in oil and gas
- Quantitive and geological-economical evaluation of probable resources
- Monitoring of licensing of oil and gas objects, tenders and auctions for the right to usa subsoil
- Monitoring of the development of the deposits under conditions of PSA
- Expertize of technical & economical feasibility studies and projects of exploration and development of the deposits under conditions of PSA and present tax system
- Analysis of economical, fiscal and legal aspects of the exploration and production of the oil and gas in foreign countries
- Analysis of activity of foreign companies in sphere of exploration and production of the oil and gas
- Elaboration of the system of the monitoring models for the principal oil and gas provinces of the Russian Federation
- Scientific and analytical accompaniment of the deep drilling projects
- Creation of the integrated informational systems using GIS technology
- Licensed educational and publishing (maps) activities
