INTERVAL-SCALED PICTURE QUALITY EVALUATION OF COMPRESSION SYSTEMS.
The development of new compression systems results to necessity of quality evaluation pictures. There are two classes of methods - subjective and objective quality evaluations. The objective methods are preferable but they have not possessed the required precision and reliability yet. The problem of finding new objective criteria requires the analyzing of subjective quality evaluations on the base of interval or ratio scale. The evaluations put directly on the ratio or interval scales in an experiment with participation of ordinal observers have not got the required precision. The method of paired comparisons is the method we need to solve this problem. Statistical analyzing the results of paired comparisons experiment gives us the evaluation of tested pictures on the interval scale.
On the basis of supposed method the experiment with groups of JPEG and MPEG-2 -compressed pictures and pictures with different numbers of quantising levels were carried out. The dependencies of subjective quality from numbers of quantising level, quantiser factor, PNSR, compression ratio and bit rate.
Supposed method can help in investigating special features of visual perception and optimizing parameters of new videocompression systems.
