The firm is situated on the Indian Ocean, 120 km north of Durban in South Africa. The firm manufactures rawhide dog chews from premium beef hide. The hide, after being processed by a tannery, is split into inner and outer layers. The outer "full grain" layer produces leather mainly for motorcar upholstery. The softer inner layers, or "drop splits" are prepared for the making of rawhide chews through a 15-hour process of washing, de-liming and bleaching. Once processing is completed, the split are cut, formed and dried in many varieties of rawhide bones and chews.
A dog is seldom happier than when gnawing on a bone. This does more than just provide entertainment, however. Rawhide chews serve an important function in maintaining a dog's dental health. The dog's saliva softens the rawhide during the chewing action, thus allowing the plaque and calculus build-up to be rubbed off without damaging the gums. In this way the mouth is kept healthy and bacteria, which can cause infections and kidney disease, are prevented from entering the body. Chewing also alleviates boredom, especially for single dogs left alone for long periods or for dogs confined to small properties.
