Facts:
Republic of Uzbekistan possesses powerful mineral and raw materials sources, as well as huge potentialities for their increase. Inward investment is fundamental to the industry and currently over 200 foreign companies contribute some US$10 billion (20% of the total investment). As mines throughout the country look at modernisation programmes, large contracts to supply equipment are being offered and more recently, awarded to international companies who have successfully entered the market.
There are over 2,700 fields prospected with more than 100 different minerals, 60 out of them are already used by national economic branches.
In terms of gold reserves Uzbekistan is the 4th world largest country, while in terms of its production -the 7th. As for uranium, Uzbekistan is the 7-8th world largest country, in terms of its production - the 4th. As for copper reserves, Uzbekistan is the 10th world largest country. There are also considerable reserves of natural gas, silver, lithium, fluorite, phosphorites, feldspar, etc.
Current state of preparatory mineral reserves not only ensures sustainable operation of the existing mining industries, but also enables to significantly increase and reorganize production of a whole range of most important mineral resources, including gold, uranium, copper, lead, zinc, silver, lithium, phosphorites, potash salts, fluorite, wollastonite, etc.
Local mining industry is highly developed; in addition, there is a favourable infrastructure in those regions, which are proposed for investing. Uzbekistan was in fact the first FSU state to host a major gold mining joint venture, the Zarafshan-Newmont JV. Since this time many of the principal exploration and development companies including Newmont Mining Corporation, Mitsui Mining Construction, Oxus Mining, Teck Corporation and Nelson Gold have seized the opportunity and successfully set up operations in dozens of mineral deposits spread throughout the country
